Bled and Beyond
A walk in the mountains - Velika Planina
After a drive, gondola ride, 2 chair lifts and a short walk you will find yourself on a gorgeous plateau about 5,000 feet up in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps that has been used by herdsmen for centuries. While the gondolas and chair lifts are part of the ski resort in the winter, this time of year is beautiful for walking. We enjoyed sladki štruklji (see dessert page!) at a small cafe surrounded by peaks and pasture. Most of the dairy cows that graze there had already been moved to lower pastures.
Day trip Nova Gorica
Still under the weather and not ready for a big hike, we decided to take the scenic Bohinj Railway line to Nova Gorica on the Italian border. The 90 minute ride took us through dozens of tunnels (the longest one is more than 5 km long) and above gorgeous canyons and valleys. Go to the link above to read more about the history of the railway, which dates from the early 20th century when Slovenia was still part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
After leaving the station at Nova Gorica to wander the town we kept puzzling over why all the street names were Italian. Little did we know that as soon as you leave the tracks at the station (very stately, Wes Anderson-esque), you are in Italy. We enjoyed a snack on the main square, walked around awhile then headed back to Bled.
We said goodbye to Bled on September 19th and our experiences there will be remembered from a very long time. What a beautiful part of the world.
